MAIN CITIES

CAGLIARI THE CAPITAL

The eno-gastronomic commodities are what characterise this section of the island: the fish dishes of the Cagliaritano, such as the burrida and the cassola, the olives and the oils of the Parteolla, of changing colours of green to gold, the intense flavours of the different types of cheeses of the Trexenta, famous at a national level, the good quality of citrus fruit of the Sarrabus and the fruit of the Gerrei, all commodities found on the menùs of local restaurants. A world of typical flavours that go from the commodities of the sea to those of the fertile Sardinian lands, to delight the palates of all those that stop by for a taste and to enrich their knowledge and experiences. Probably founded in the VIII century B.C. by the Phoenicians, the city of Cagliari has always been Sardinia’s gateway and all the people arriving to the island have here established the centre of their power. Capital city of the entire region, the town developed around the Castello hill, one of the four historical quarters, together with Marina, Villanova and Stampace.

Divided, by referendum, into eight provinces, the lay-out of Sardinia is further characterised by territorial specificity of great interest that represents dense microcosms of well exploited and exploitable environmental and cultural wealth. The island in fact keeps its vital subdivision alive, set up in medieval times, of the four judicial entities - Cagliari, Torres, Arborea and Gallura - in curatorial areas, that is, in easily circumscribed administrable regions. The pulsating heart of the island includes territories rich in tradition and exceptional natural landscape such as Barbagia, Baronie, Gennargentu, Supramonte, Mandrolisai, Barigadu, Sarcidano and Goceano. Unusual, often little known sceneries, rich in charm and identity to discover corners and snippets of the thousand faces of Sardinia.

SASSARI AND NURAGHE

Spread upon a plateau fasing towards the Asinara island, Sassari combines the beauty of its monuments and the elegance of its streets to the virtues of rare hospitality. It boasts various artistic jewels, distributed among churches, museums and lively festivals. Good cuisine and climate throughout the year make an interesting stop during the tour of north-western Sardinia. From the flatlands of Nurra, whose landscape is alive with rich vegetation and a coast full of captivating colours, the territories of North-western Sardinia offer their numerous specificities, among which those connected to craftsmanship: from the baskets of Anglona, that find their rightful place of maximum expression in the weaving museum of Castelsardo, from the vermentino wines of Meilogu to the oils of the Sassarese and the embroideries of Villanova. Moreover, it is slice of Sardinia characterised by extremely evocative archaeological finds, such as the Tempio di Monte d’Accoddi in Sassari or the Nuraghe Santo Antine in Torralba and spectacular historical-artistic testimonies, like the Holy Trinity of Saccargia in Codrongianos or the Retablo Maggiore di Ardara.

OLBIA AND COSTA SMERALDA

An itinerary along the Gallura coast, suspended over a magnificent sea, with its thousands crystalline reflexes, and precious dockings. From Olbia, a town of ancient Greek or Carthaginian, to Santa Teresa, the most Northerly centre of the Island, founded in the XIX century, which has become a quality tourist centre, passing through the elegant Porto Cervo. The sea and the mountains, natural landscapes for antonomasia, are found reunited in the representative territories of this north-eastern section of Sardinia that contains Baronie, Gallura, Montacuto and Nuorese.

These areas are characterised by the presence of coloured beaches, hemmed by delicate vegetation, such as those of the Emerald Coast, or by tall hills with rocks and fauna of true wealth. But it is always the towns that provide the pulling force for the Sardinian sub regions, with their uses and traditional customs, with the variety of their eno-gastronomic delicacies and with monuments to be visited and admired to discover another piece in the island’s jigsaw.

ORISTANO AND MONTEFERRU

The sweetness of the landscape, that pleasantly adds lagoons, coastlines, hills and monuments of rare beauty, is the distinctive mark of the territories of this section of the island. A fundamental characteristic, in fact, of the Oristanese is the gentle rolling of the hilly and level sections, with the presence of wetlands of great interest, as the pond of Marceddì, particularly rich in fish species. The Sinis is an integral part, along with the island of Mal di Ventre, of the protected marine area for the beauty of its coast and for the flora and fauna species that find residence there. More north is the Planargia with its amazing geographical varieties that go from enchanting beaches to wild cliffs, to its mountain meadows and valleys under the watchful eyes of the griffons.

And finally we have the Montiferru, a massif of volcanic origin covered in dense woods and imposing rocky formations.

NUORO AND BARBAGIA

Sardinia’s central mountains show the visitors their treasures, their monuments, traditions. There are numerous testimonies of Italy’s literary history, such as the Literary Park of Grazia Deledda in Nuoro, and various events where literature shows itself in its becoming, like Gavoi’s Literature Festival. The pulsating heart of the island lives here, in this piece of Sardinia that warmly embraces the territories of Barigadu, Barbagia, Goceano, Mandrolisai, Marghine, Marmilla and Sarcidano, an oasis of tradition and culture, characterised by a variegated landscape that stretches from the mountain to the soft hill, from the river to the falls, all seasoned with uncontaminated, harsh nature, rich in endemic species of flora and fauna.

And then the enological-gastronomic commodities are its masters: a dense cuisine of tastes and authenticity accompanied by wines of continually renewed bouquet

OGLIASTRA AND GENNARGENTU

Mountains, rocks, crystalline sea: this is the landscape that is found in the territories that make up this section of Sardinia, that is, the Ogliastra with its ‘Tacchi’ (mountain outcrops), desert areas and small isolated coves; the Gennargentu with its snow-covered mountain tops and its skies, playground to the majestic golden eagle; and finally the Supramonte, an uncontaminated paradise of still unexplored caves, centuries-old forests and archaeological and naturalistic treasures.

In these areas the keen sports enthusiasts can find their dream: in fact, there is all the space needed to practice equestrian sports, even long rides on the beaches, to climb up the tall, vertical rocky walls that look out onto the sea, to do a variety of surfing activities, to go trekking and go on mountain bike excursions, all pleasant alternatives to visit otherwise inaccessible areas.

IGLESIAS AND CAMPIDANO

Password: mines. This the access key to the territories of Sulcis and Iglesiente, whose landscape has been substantially modified by the intense mining activity that had characterised the area for many a year, leaving traces of what is known as manufacturing archaeology. However, characterising the vast lowland of the Campidano are expanses of grain fields with their warm, intense colours, that going toward the south are replaced by fragrant orchards with enclosures of eucalyptuses and cypresses.

Interesting archaeological and historical-artistic finds, such as the marvellous Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Uta are also found contained within this area. This suggestive itinerary, following the Phoenician footsteps, leads the visitors from the oldest cities in the island to the most modern ones, like the mine town of Carbonia, set among wonderful beaches, carsic caves rich in uncomparable creation, original dishes and ancient traditions still alive in people’s hearts.
